Golf: The Best of Rounds, the Worst of Rounds

You might remember that I started playing golf in July this summer. Just an update, I played Friday at the Hiawatha city course in Minneapolis, and had a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde kind of round. The good news: I made par on three holes. The bad news: I had a 12, a 9, and another 9. I also had an amazing 240-yard tee shot on #6, dead-center in the fairway, which I wasted with a shanked approach, a terrible chip and a 3-putt.

Intellectually I know I should feel pretty good -- after three months of playing golf I consistently break 120. On the other hand, **how** I get under 120 is maddeningly inconsistent. The hole on which I scored a 12, I completely lost the ability to hit the ball squarely. When my driving improves, it seems as if my irons go awry. My chipping is consistently awful. My putting is actually not too bad.

I've only got about 2-3 weeks left before the golf season ends here in Minnesota. Under my mild-mannered exterior I'm a bit of a competitive perfectionist -- so we'll see how much I can improve before the snow flies.
